AT&T to press state for franchise authority as council prepares to vote on EPB plan
As EPB prepares to enter the cable television and residential telephone business, AT&T Corp. appears to be holding off on any such expansion in Chattanooga to see if lawmakers grant statewide franchising authority for the communications giant. AT&T spokeswoman Terri Denard said Monday that Tennessee's biggest telecommunications provider has not made any decision yet about adding video services in the state's biggest markets such as Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga. AT&T plans again next year to try to convince the Tennessee Legislature to grant statewide franchising authority to allow cable TV service to be added anywhere in the state without franchise approval in every local jurisdiction, Ms. Denard said. "We're still in the process of reviewing all of our options regarding local franchises," she said.
